Charles Darwin began researching expressions and the similarities he found between humans and animals. It was during this time he began a correspondence with Duchenne. With his own research and conversations with Duchenne, Darwin wrote The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, a book considered to be the first scientific study of nonverbal communication.
Darwin wrote that facial expressions of emotions are universal. Darwin stated that these expressions were biologically determined, an idea that caused much controversy at the time. Recently, many scientists have found that there are some emotions that are universal, though there are some cultural differences in how they are shown.
